The Novella was conceived as a story covering the last two weeks of the life of Caravaggio. But he barely appears as a character. At least one prequel is being prepared (Genius), and a sequel (The Skin of a Saint).

The Characters

The novella includes real people and many of their characteristics can be found in source material. We meet the high clergy, the street people of Rome, ladies and boys of the night, soldiers, a blind lute player and some most unpleasant folk. But the central crowd are the friends of J, Justiniano Visconte, model, rent boy, swordsman, and adventurer,

Time and place

Two weeks in late spring 1610, in Rome, the area south of Rome, the coastal sea from halfway to Naples up to Porto Ercol, the same distance north of Rome. Though entirely fictional there are elements of researched material which helps the veracity of the racy tale, on land and sea.
